addedGreetings! Today I introduce Down Below Chapter One version 0.2.9, bringing a variety of new content, changes, and bug fixes!
addedTo begin, I'd like to introduce the new opening scene, which throws you into the heat of battle and introduces the game's core combat mechanics, and also shows what the experience will be like in future versions when the player has advanced further into the game.
addedThis was added as a way to hook the player right from the beginning of the game, as it has been my goal to provide an interesting experience for players right from the get-go.
addedI also gave Winston a few new animations to give him some more personality:
changedI hope these updates increase the enjoyment for incoming players, and if there is anything you would like to see implemented in the future, want changed, or if you have discovered a bug, then you can let me know either in the subreddit or in the discord server. Enjoy! :) Steam post image

To begin, I'd like to introduce the new opening scene, which throws you into the heat of battle and introduces the game's core combat mechanics, and also shows what the experience will be like in future versions when the player has advanced further into the game.

Long story short, instead of opening the with some funky cryptic text, you open it with being bombarded by a bunch of enemies! (And then followed by some funky cryptic text........................)

This was added as a way to hook the player right from the beginning of the game, as it has been my goal to provide an interesting experience for players right from the get-go.

The second biggest change is the complete overhaul of Winston's dialogue. To tell you the truth, I went back and looked at some of it and thought, "What in the world was I thinking?"

So naturally it needed to be redone.

I also gave Winston a few new animations to give him some more personality:

Alongside that, I also redid the bridge scene for Winston:

Finally some bug fixes. I've made a bad habit of prematurely releasing small updates without fully testing them. However, I believe I can safely say that this is the most stable release of Down Below that I currently have published. The two biggest bugs I came across were the dialogue not continuing during the second scene with Magnus and Ptolemy, and save data being deleted after going to a platforming level. The latter was caused by the top-down and platforming levels being handled in separate scenes within the GDevelop Engine, thus deleting any data that hadn't been saved in the previous scene.

I hope these updates increase the enjoyment for incoming players, and if there is anything you would like to see implemented in the future, want changed, or if you have discovered a bug, then you can let me know either in the subreddit or in the discord server. Enjoy! :) Steam post image
