Devil's Due — Patch v0.9.8

New Boss, Leaderboards and Achievements!

Steam Leaderboard Integration

  • Full Steam Leaderboard — Your score is automatically uploaded to the Steam leaderboard "DevilsDue_AllTime" when you die. The leaderboard is created via the Steamworks SDK if it doesn't exist.

  • Global & Friends Rankings — View Global top scores, Friends-only rankings, and your Personal Bests from 3 tabs in the leaderboard panel.

  • Global Rank on Certificate — Your Steam global rank is shown on the Certificate of Damnation after each run.

  • Personal Bests — All your runs are tracked locally with phase reached, date, and bosses defeated. View your top 20 runs.

  • Steam name auto-fill — Your Steam display name is automatically used on the Certificate of Damnation.

New Scoring System

  • Points-based scoring replaces letter grades — Your final score is now a numeric value based on multiple factors:

  • Phase reached (100 pts/phase), boss kills (500+ pts each), rounds completed (25 pts/round), credits remaining, and time survived.

  • Difficulty multiplier — Playing with fewer or lower-rarity charms earns a higher score multiplier. No legendaries? +30% bonus. Only commons? +50%. The Devil rewards the bold.

  • Speed bonuses — Defeat bosses quickly or finish fast for extra points.

Detailed Leaderboard

  • Expandable entries on all tabs — Click any entry in Global, Friends, or Personal Bests to expand it and see detailed information.

  • Player name on every run — Your Steam name is now saved with each personal best entry.

  • Per-boss fight timings — Each run tracks individual boss fight duration and total elapsed time in min:sec format.

  • Score breakdown — Expanded entries show exactly where your points came from: Phase progress, Boss kills, Rounds completed, Credits remaining, Survival bonus, Time bonus, and Difficulty multiplier.

  • Cross-referenced Global/Friends — Your own entries in Global and Friends tabs show full breakdown from your local personal bests.

  • Wider leaderboard panel — The Hall of Damnation is now larger with improved text sizing for better readability.

  • Time format — All durations now display as min:sec (e.g. 3:45) instead of 3m 45s.

🎭 NEW BOSS: The Puppeteer (Phase 12)

"Dance for me, little mortal... every spin pulls another string."A sinister marionette master draped in woven playing cards awaits you at the end of Phase 12. His grotesquely long fingers pull crimson puppet strings from the shadows — and now they're attached to your slot machine.

Boss Abilities

  • Puppet Strings — Forces your next 2 spins onto a rigged, no-win grid. The Puppeteer decides what you see.

  • Tangled Fate — Disables 2 of your charms for 3 spins by tangling their strings. Your power-ups betray you.

  • Curtain Call — Hides all win pattern indicators for 2 spins. You spin completely blind — no lines, no highlights, just faith.

Boss Stats

  • HP: 350

  • Damage from credits: 0.2x

  • Damage from patterns: 12 per pattern

🏆 Legendary Charm Reward: Marionette's Freedom

Defeat The Puppeteer to claim Marionette's Freedom — when you would lose credits from a boss ability, there's a 40% chance the loss is redirected back to the boss as damage instead. Cut the strings. Turn the tables.

Bug Fixes — Leaderboard & Scoring

  • Timer reset on new game — The leaderboard timer now properly resets when starting a new run. Previously, boss fight timings were calculated relative to the first game's start time.

  • Boss speed bonus fixed — The speed bonus for defeating bosses quickly now uses the actual fight duration instead of total elapsed game time.

  • Score calculation optimized — Final score is now only computed when the game ends, not on every frame.

  • Shop no longer has scrollbar — The shop layout now fits entirely within the viewport without scrolling. Cards, icons, and buttons scale to fit the screen.

Certificate of Damnation — Redesign

  • Clean, elegant design — Minimalist dark theme with clear typography and proper layout hierarchy.

  • Fixed action bar — Download, Share, and New Game buttons are now pinned to the top — always accessible.

  • Score display — Shows your numeric score with Steam upload confirmation.

  • Personal Ranking — Your rank among all personal bests is now shown on the certificate, with the runs above and below you.

  • New Run button — Start a fresh run directly from the certificate — no more getting stuck on the Game Over screen.

  • Boss 4 tracking — The Puppeteer now appears in the Bosses Defeated section.

Bug Fixes

  • Leaderboard button now works — The leaderboard modal was hidden behind the start menu. Fixed.

  • Restart buttons fixed — "Surrender Soul" and "Keep Fighting" now work correctly during Game Over.

  • Symbols & Win Patterns no longer overflow — The left panel is now properly contained within the screen.

  • Personal bests reset properly — Score upload state resets when starting a new run, so scores are always tracked.

Bug Fixes

Gameplay

  • Boss FightSpin cost check fixed — Players with exactly enough credits for a boss fight spin were incorrectly treated as defeated. You can now spend your last coins on one final spin.
  • Spin counter accuracy — Extra spins granted by charms like Fake Coin were sometimes silently lost due to a stale state issue. Spin tracking is now fully accurate.

  • Charm removal actually works now — Removing or using a charm (e.g. Devil's Favor freebie) no longer causes it to reappear on the next frame. Charms stay gone when you discard them.

  • Banana Peel no longer shows a fake Jackpot — The "forced loss" grid was previously filled with identical symbols, visually displaying a massive JACKPOT win while telling you you lost. The grid now shows mixed symbols so there's no visual confusion.

  • Cloverpet description fixed — The Cloverpet charm always displayed "+0 multiplier" regardless of how many coupons you owned. It now correctly shows the actual bonus based on your coupon count.

  • Chaos Shuffle: No more invisible symbols — During the Fortune Ripper boss's Chaos Shuffle ability, the last symbol (DEVILSCOIN) could be assigned a 0% spawn chance, making it impossible to roll. All symbols now always have at least 1% chance.

  • Prepaid Tribute credit fix — Credits you pre-paid toward your tribute were not subtracted from the final amount due. You were essentially paying twice. Prepaid credits are now properly deducted before the final tribute payment.

Visual Overhaul

Boss Ability Effects

Every boss ability now has a unique visual overlay on the slot grid while active:

  • Credit Tax — Golden pulsing border with coin-drain glow

  • Wage Garnishment — Green healing siphon effect rising upward

  • Debt Spiral — Red crushing border that squeezes the grid

  • Chaos Shuffle — Rainbow cycling border and hue-shifting grid

  • Pattern Curse — Dark purple diagonal curse lines

  • Lucky Drain — Blue luck-draining aura

  • Charm Nullify — Grayscale void spreading across the grid

  • Hellfire Spin — Flickering fire from the bottom with heat tint

  • Soul Rend — Dark purple soul-draining pulse

  • Puppet Strings — Red diagonal strings over a shaking, desaturated grid

  • Tangled Fate — Wandering purple chaos swirl

  • Curtain Call — Black curtain drops from above, completely obscuring the grid

Slot Machine Feel

  • Running lights around the slot grid — Color-cycling border lights that change based on state: rainbow idle, fast white/gold while spinning, bright gold on win, dim red on loss.

  • Stats bar glow — Credits, Coupons, Spins, and Luck boxes now have subtle colored inner glow matching their theme.

  • Win pattern panel light strip — Animated vertical light strip on the left side of the pattern panel, scrolling through warm colors.

Bug Fix: Debt Spiral now works

  • Debt Spiral actually reduces winnings — The Debt Warden's "Debt Spiral" ability (halve multipliers) was stored as an active effect but never applied to winnings. It now correctly reduces all win amounts by 50% while active.

UI & Display

  • Shop screen fits on screen — On 1080p and smaller displays, the "Leave Shop" button was pushed below the visible area due to excessive padding and fixed grid heights. The shop now scrolls properly and uses less padding.

  • Game Over screen scrollable — The certificate of damnation, name input, and action buttons (Download/Share/New Game) were cut off on smaller screens. The entire Game Over screen is now scrollable.

  • Victory Screen charm selection visible — After defeating a boss with a full charm inventory, the charm replacement grid and "NEVERMIND" button were hidden below the screen edge. The victory overlay now scrolls to show all options.

  • Settings panel scrollable — The settings panel has many sections (Music, SFX, Voice, Window Mode, Resolution, Animations, UI Scale, Quit). On smaller windows or 768p displays, the bottom sections including the Quit button were unreachable. The panel now scrolls.

  • Music player no longer errors on startup — A division-by-zero crash occurred when the music player tried to play before the song list finished loading. The player now waits until songs are available.
