fixed⚠️ Context surrounding v1.96 crash: we determined that DemonCrawl would not launch when the device was connected via wi-fi due to a very old GameMaker runtime. After updating our tooling, this issue appears to be resolved in v1.97; we tested this new version on two separate Windows 11 devices--one connected via ethernet and the other via wi-fi--both of which worked fine.

We have deployed a patch for DemonCrawl on the Windows stable branch.

⚠️ Context surrounding v1.96 crash: we determined that DemonCrawl would not launch when the device was connected via wi-fi due to a very old GameMaker runtime. After updating our tooling, this issue appears to be resolved in v1.97; we tested this new version on two separate Windows 11 devices--one connected via ethernet and the other via wi-fi--both of which worked fine.

No ETA yet for other platforms as we're looking for player feedback regarding client stability. However, we're trying some server-side changes that may allow 1.96 to run on Mac and Linux - feedback would be appreciated on this as well.

Note that 32-bit support has been retired as it's no longer available in GameMaker.

  • New video setting "Cell Background": draws a dark border behind cells to help separate stage graphics from the main background

Balance Changes

  • Increased starting lives in Hard Mode from 3 to 4

  • Reduced the Item Shop price multiplier in Hard Mode from 125% to 110%

  • Reduced the material cost of Lv3 emblems from 1000 to 300

  • Hand of Glory buffed:"Whenever you leave a stage, gain 10 coins then steal coins from all visible strangers equal to their price."

  • Healthy Heart buffed:"Whenever you restore life, restore the same amount of life after 40 turns."

  • Appetizer buffed:"Restore 1 life whenever you spend at least 4 coins."

  • Stake nerfed:"Every 60 turns without making a mistake, double the stage power."

  • Shopping Bag price increased from 7 to 14 coins

  • Lucky Bamboo price increased from 5 to 7 coins

  • Big Wallet price increased from 8 to 9 coins

  • Arcane Barrier price increased from 15 to 25 coins

  • Reflector Blade price increased from 26 to 32 coins

  • Mind Gut price decreased from 38 to 22 coins

  • Fake Moustache price decreased from 45 to 38 coins

  • Rosin price decreased from 22 to 19 coins

  • Dawn Binder price decreased from 50 to 35 coins

  • Updated GameMaker runtime to the latest version

  • Updated Steamworks extension to the latest version

  • Set default leaderboard version to 1.97

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed several potential memory leaks

  • Fixed multiple issues related to networked events

  • Reworked fragile Smithy stage item logic

  • Added guardrails around `sprite_delete()` calls to prevent issues with newer GameMaker runtime

  • Fixed crash that could occur when clicking on an achievement

  • Fixed a few different crashes that could occur when clicking on objects in the Item Tree special stage

  • Multiple fixes for Arena
