This happened due to the game redrawing the inventory at each frame after combining an item, only when the inventory had a lot of items (in which case the inventory is divided into two parts to avoid big texture pages that wouldn't work on old computers) It caused massive slowdowns and sometimes freezes or crashes. This issue wasn't noticeable on more powerful computers.
