Death Before Decaf — v0.2 "First Drop"

Release date: 2026-06-08 · Steam EA branch

What's new

Loot drops + affixes — the actual roguelite layer

The Undergrinds now drop gear when enemies die. 25 distinct affixes across four rarities power them. Equip up to 5 items per run; affixes stack into raw stat budget. Build identity finally matters.

  • 14 Common affixes — bread-and-butter modifiers (Coarse Grind, Thick Foam, Light Roast, Steam Pressure…). Each rolls a single stat boost.

  • 6 Rare affixes — Pressurized, Cracked Filter, Audit-Proof, Resilient Foam, Concentrate Residue, Pressurized Reserve. Roll with two stats.

  • 5 Epic affixes — Dead Man's Espresso, Cryo Drip, Blackout Roast, Iron Filter, Siphon Protocol. Three-stat rolls, run-defining.

  • Legendary tier lit up — multi-affix drops with unique modifiers, reserved for elites and bosses.

All affixes drop on every slot — Tamper, Pitcher, Pull, Armor, Utility. The painted sprite a procedural item shows is mapped semantically per (slot, affix) — Cracked Filter on a tamper actually looks cracked, Foam affixes on a pitcher show the foam pitcher, Pressurized affixes show the reinforced one.

Stash + Loadout UI

  • Stash modal (TAB in-run, or Break Room) — full painted sprites per drop, rarity-colored cards, slot tabs, affix-derived description text. Every item shows its actual stat contribution.

  • HUD loadout strip — 5-slot row above the weapon strip. Shows equipped item painted sprites with rarity-colored borders.

  • Pickup toast — top-left when you grab a drop. Big enough to read mid-fight, 6-second display, painted icon, rarity color, TAB-to-equip hint.

  • Achievement toast — same size as pickup toast for visual symmetry on the right side.

Achievement icons — the real ones, not placeholders

The comic-style achievement art that was generated months ago is finally shipped: 10 registered achievements now ship with their proper painted icons in-game and on Steam.

Rarity palette — consistent across every screen

Loot rarity colors now match across the HUD loadout strip, stash modal, in-run loot toast, run-selection loadout preview, in-world drop glow, and the death screen loot summary. WoW-classical mapping:

  • Common — green

  • Rare — blue

  • Epic — purple

  • Legendary — orange

Quality fixes

  • Achievement toast no longer re-fires for already-earned achievements after a game restart.

  • Level-up upgrade choices no longer offer the same 2nd-weapon upgrade twice in consecutive level-ups (Cold Brew Cannon Copy etc.).

  • Run start no longer crashes after equipping a procedurally rolled item — defense-in-depth at every save/load/equip boundary.

Known limitations

  • Skill-Tree ships in v0.3 (not this drop). Break Room nodes still show the existing meta-progression for now.

  • Five v1.0 achievements have Steam icons uploaded but no in-game trigger logic yet — coming in v0.3.

Coming soon

  • Public Codex / Lore site expansion — a new "Arsenal" section showing every droppable affix with its painted sprite and rarity styling, plus image-enriched lore pages for enemies, factions, characters, and locations. Landing post-v0.2.

  • v0.3 — Skill Tree + 5 additional achievements wired.
