Cruise Ship Manager - January 2023 Devlog

Ahoy sailors and shipowners!

In this blog, we'd like to put a spotlight on the crew that mans the cruise ship. Without them, no vessel would be able to hit the waves. As your ship becomes bigger and better equipped, you will need more professionals to handle all kinds of tasks - from cleaning the rooms to serving guests in restaurants or casinos. You will be managing the crew in Cruise Ship Manager: Prologue - Maiden Voyage, so it's good to have a quick summary.

It's essential to seek recruits when you dock in a port. A useful hiring menu will help you to find the right people for the job. On the left, you have a handy list of all facilities you currently have on your ship. This will help you make the right decisions: where you need more people and how many crew members you'll need to keep your amenities running and in good shape.

Every potential crew member has a variety of stats you need to keep in consideration. Those can be specializations - like gastronomy, entertainment, or engineering - but also individual traits - such as efficiency, organization, or diligence. You don't wanna put a good engineer in the kitchen - if you have a choice.

The higher the stats, the larger the wage. You can see the total wages of already hired staff on the right, so you will know how much more you can spend. You can also hire a batch of crew members - by the most skilled, the cheapest, or even randomly!

Once you hire the crew, you can assign them to different rooms, but also for specific tasks. Those tasks may vary from cleaning or repairing a bed before the passenger gets back to the cabin, to straight-up firefighting if things go bad enough to cause a fire in one of the rooms. You should always be on the lookout if there is an urgent task, and then assign a free crewman with Patrol function. That doesn't mean you don't have to check on people who work on posts. Bad service in a restaurant or a lifeguard that doesn't keep a good eye on the pool will surely anger the passengers and this translates to a lowering reputation.

But beware! Humans are humans - if they are overworked, they will make mistakes and their morale will lower. Replacing fatigued workers and letting them rest is another essential element in running your ship. However, you will often won't have as many crew members as would be optimal. So be ready for some balancing here!
