Crestfallen: Medieval Survival changes
We are honored to announce that Crestfallen: Medieval Survival will be featured in Steam Medieval Fest 2026, beginning April 20th. It is both a privilege and a proving ground, and we are eager to place our world—and its evolving systems—before you.
With that said, we want to speak candidly about the current state of development and the path forward.
Over the past iteration, we introduced a significantly more complex progression and crafting architecture—one that, in theory, offered immense depth and systemic interdependence. In practice, however, it created an onboarding barrier that proved too steep for many players. The combinatorial explosion of crafting components, gear dependencies, and unclear progression vectors led to friction where there should have been discovery.
As developers, we view this not as a failure—but as data.
Reversion with Purpose
We have made the deliberate decision to revert to our previous, more stable version as a foundation. This allows us to rebuild critical systems with greater intentionality and clarity, rather than layering complexity atop instability.
Our current focus is threefold:
Quest System Expansion We are designing a more structured and narratively grounded quest system to guide player progression. This includes a fully realized tutorial questline aimed at onboarding players into the core gameplay loops—combat, crafting, and building—without overwhelming them.
System Cohesion (Combat + Building + Crafting) Our newer combat and building systems represent a meaningful leap forward in fidelity and responsiveness. The goal now is to ensure the quest system complements these mechanics, creating a cohesive gameplay loop rather than isolated feature sets.
Clarity in Crafting & Progression Thousands of components and gear paths demand better communication. We are implementing clearer categorization, progression signaling, and in-world logic to help players understand not just what to craft—but why.
Lore-Driven Boss Encounters Boss fights are being reworked to align more tightly with the game’s narrative framework. Each encounter will be contextually grounded, with lore that reinforces both world-building and mechanical significance.
Design Philosophy Moving Forward
Our approach is rooted in a simple principle:
Complexity must emerge from mastery—not confusion. Steam post image
We are refining systems so that depth unfolds naturally as players engage, rather than confronting them all at once. The objective is a layered experience—approachable at first glance, yet rich enough to reward long-term investment.
