🧟 Devlog #3 — Bombs, Freeze, and Tactical Mayhem
Hey survivors! 🤘
Welcome back to another update on the development of Contagion Protocol — the pixel-art zombie-slaying bullet hell roguelike fueled by heavy metal and early-morning hustle. Let’s dive into the latest chaos we’ve been building:
🎮 Major Progress & Gameplay Updates
⚡ New Tactical Pickups: Bombs & Freeze Potions
Bomb Pickup: Instantly annihilates all zombies on screen. Massive screen flash + slow-motion effect for that satisfying “oh sht”* moment.
Freeze Potion: Freezes all zombies solid for 5 seconds — giving you critical breathing room to reposition and punish.
Details:
1 in 20 zombies drop a Bomb or Freeze Potion (random chance).
Only one pickup can exist at a time.
30-second cooldowns after pickups to keep balance.
These pickups add huge tactical depth without overcomplicating your core gameplay.
🎬 Screen Flash & Slow Motion Polish
Bomb pickups now trigger a full-screen flash using an optimized Canvas system.
After the flash, a smooth 0.4 second slow-motion window kicks in, making your multi-kill moments feel massive.
Freeze Potion properly halts both zombie movement and animation speed — without breaking death animations.
Big kills = big feels. Exactly what a survival shooter needs.
🩸 Blood FX Optimization
Blood FX now auto-despawns after 20 seconds and is fully pooled.
This fixes memory leaks and prevents late-game lag, even when you’re racking up thousands of kills.
Polish matters — and this was a major step toward making Contagion Protocol buttery smooth.
📈 Zombie Spawner & Scaling Enhancements
Early gameplay now focuses on slow zombies to help players build momentum.
After 90 seconds, faster zombies begin sneaking into the horde.
Enemy health and speed scale dynamically over time to keep tension rising.
We’re setting the stage for special zombies, elite variants, and bosses in the near future.
🛠️ Core System Improvements
XP Shards and blood effects fully pooled to stabilize memory usage.
GameManager cleanup: Better handling of pickups, weapon management, and scene transitions.
- Modular Pickup SystemBombs and Freeze Potions are now built modularly, meaning new pickups like Magnets (vacuum XP!) will be easy to add soon.
Screen Flash Manager: Visual effects optimized to avoid CPU/GPU overhead.
🐞 Bugs Crushed
Fixed a nasty Main Menu bug where player references weren’t properly cleaned up after death.
Solved issues with bullet trails spawning incorrectly on weapon fire.
FreezePotion correctly respects death animations even while frozen.
Every bug fixed = smoother runs = happier survivors. 💀

Implementing the Magnet Pickup to vacuum up XP shards instantly.
Designing new weapon types and synergy systems for deeper build variety.
Preparing to add elite zombies and horde pulses to break up endless flow.
