Development History Recap📝

We will continue rounding up the development records we have been sharing little by little on X here in the devblog.

Whether you have seen them before or are reading them for the first time, we hope you will enjoy looking back with us.

The Paper and Ink Laboratory - Raising the Resolution of the World

One element that is essential to establishing the world of Chronoscript is the presence of manuscript paper.

Inside the 3D manor, 2D manuscript pages are scattered around. Within those pages lies an exploration-based action game. To make that concept work as actual in-game footage, we have been carrying out steady rounds of testing.

The first thing we tackled was ink experimentation. We dropped different kinds of ink onto different kinds of paper, checking how they spread and what impressions their shapes created. Ink expression is something we want to treat with great care in this game.

Next, we worked on testing the texture of manuscript paper placed in the 3D space. Shape, texture, torn edges, curves… Since we had decided early on that the 2D action fields would be hand-drawn, how naturally the paper matched the 3D space would directly affect the entire world. We are testing these details carefully.

From Monochrome to Color - The Evolution of the Art Style

In the early stages of development, the game screen was monochrome. While preserving the world created by delicate pen-and-ink linework, how should we add the new personality of “color”? This is something we are still exploring.

We decided that the protagonist’s cloak would be red. But what color should the brooch be? How should we combine the eye colors? As we tried countless variations, we carefully chose a color scheme worthy of becoming the face of the game.

We are continuing to explore ways to give the character personality through “color” without losing the strength of the simple design.

Enemy Design - What Emerges from Rough Sketches

Player actions become fun when there are enemies they can be used against effectively.

What kinds of enemies will you fight, and in what kinds of situations? We start by drawing rough sketches to solidify the image.

From sketches packed with hurried fragments of ideas, we choose what will actually be implemented.

Please look forward to discovering what kinds of actions made it into the final game.

Between Stages - Benches and Illustrations

During exploration, you will come across “benches.” They are places to save, recover, and upgrade equipment. They are also places where you can prepare for the next battle while feeling the world of the story more deeply.

Each bench background features an illustration that symbolizes the location. Making use of the setting, “exploring within a story written on manuscript paper,” these illustrations are designed to tell, through pictures, what happened there and what kind of boss exists in that place. The relief of finding a bench when your health is hanging by a thread. Setting down your sword and reading for a little while. That kind of time is part of the journey, too.

And We Have Passed 50,000 Wishlists!

This happened a little while ago, but we have now passed 50,000 wishlists. Thank you so much! To everyone who has immersed themselves in the manuscript alongside us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Please stay tuned for more updates!

That is all for this devblog!
