Let me give you an example. If you chop down a tree and use it as a building material, that’s perfectly fine. If you start going crazy slashing the trees one by one without planting new ones, you’re risking angering the island. From things like weather changes or animals running away to the eruption of the old volcano - the island has ways to express its wrath.
