changedCreating a SanctuaryFor us, the Tea House isn't just a generic shop where you click buttons to buy stuff. We’ve spent a lot of time researching the Sengoku period to make sure it feels like a real refuge. We focused on the concept of Jaku (tranquility) everything from the way the tatami mats are laid out to the tokonoma in the back is there to give you a moment of peace between fights.
changedInspirations & MechanicsOn the gameplay side, we’ve taken some notes from games like Slay the Spire . We wanted the card trading to feel grounded, so we designed the UI to look like traditional rice paper. You'll be dealing directly with the Tea Mistress to plan your next move.
addedInspirations & MechanicsBut it’s not all meditation. We’ve also added a darker corner for Chō-han , a traditional dice game. Historically, these places were hubs for rōnin to trade secrets, so in our game, you’ll be able to gamble your gold for rumors and plot leads that you can’t get anywhere else.
changedThe Cinematic ProcessCan you help us out? As an indie studio, every single Wishlist counts more than you can imagine. It’s the only way to stop the Steam algorithm from ignoring us! If you like what you see, hit that button.
addedThe Cinematic ProcessWe’d love to hear what you think. Does the atmosphere feel right? Should we add more mini-games to the Tea House? Let us know in the comments or join us on Discord .

Hey everyone,
We’ve been working hard on Burakku Jakku Samurai, and we’re finally ready to share some process with you. In this devlog, we wanted to take a break from the combat mechanics and show you the place where you'll be spending your downtime: The Tea House.
Creating a Sanctuary
For us, the Tea House isn't just a generic shop where you click buttons to buy stuff. We’ve spent a lot of time researching the Sengoku period to make sure it feels like a real refuge. We focused on the concept of Jaku (tranquility) everything from the way the tatami mats are laid out to the tokonoma in the back is there to give you a moment of peace between fights.
Inspirations & Mechanics
On the gameplay side, we’ve taken some notes from games like Slay the Spire. We wanted the card trading to feel grounded, so we designed the UI to look like traditional rice paper. You'll be dealing directly with the Tea Mistress to plan your next move.
But it’s not all meditation. We’ve also added a darker corner for Chō-han, a traditional dice game. Historically, these places were hubs for rōnin to trade secrets, so in our game, you’ll be able to gamble your gold for rumors and plot leads that you can’t get anywhere else.
The Cinematic Process
Lastly, we’re showing off a bit of the work-in-progress for our opening cinematic. It’s been a massive task to translate the story we have in our heads into frame-by-frame pixel art. In the video, you can see a quick time-lapse of how we draw everything pixel by pixel. It’s slow work, but seeing it come to life makes it worth it.
