Boons & Burdens changes
Welcome new and old!
Boons & Burdens has recently found itself having a bit of a resurgence. It's been 2 years since it exited Early Access, and as a solo developer, that's basically an eternity.
I know some of you have purchased this with the intent of playing it on the Steam Deck. I also have been made aware that camera scrolling drops the frame rate on the Steam Deck, currently.
When I first made this game, I didn't have a Steam Deck for testing, so I relied on feedback from Valve and my players in Discord. Everything seemed good way back when, during Early Access. I have video from players running on deck at 60 fps (or high 50s during heavy action). So I'm not sure what changed over time.
I have a Steam Deck now, and I am currently looking into the issues.
I don't know if I'll be able to deliver a solution, but I'm working on it.
For the time being, the best way to play is on PC
I'll update soon with anything I find.
Sorry for any inconvenience, but I hope you enjoy this little game I made on PC.
Update #01
It seems Proton and the game's engine have drifted apart in their old age, and no longer play nice with one another, but there is a way to improve performance a bit for the time being.
In the Steam Settings for Boons & Burdens:
Switch to an experimental branch: Properties > game versions and betas > "steamdeck"
Once you have this version installed, force compatibility to 9.0-4 under "compatibility"
And finally, disable Steam Input under the "controller" settings if the controls stop responding
This was able to improve the fps for me considerably, but it was still fluctuating a lot. It mostly held around 45 while moving and shooting, and overall felt pretty smooth despite the dips.
I know this is not ideal, and hopefully I'll have a better solution in the future.
Update #02
With the help of another dev, we've found the bottleneck with current Proton compatibility. And will hopefully be able to supply a solution...Not sure how long it could take. Hopefully soon.
It's mostly out of my hands as it involves changes directly to the engine, but the dev is working on it.
More info soon.
