changedSelf hosting or local coopThough multiplayer was always part of our vision for the game, we are happy with the single-player, legacy experience we have created with this release. Having an easy way to implement self-hosted servers or a local co-op mode were both things we investigated but didn’t have the resources for.
changedSelf hosting or local coopSelf hosting servers are, however, something we believe possible through modding and we’re incredibly excited to see the community already investigating the option in our Discord!
changedMusicIn order to make the music more accessible to our community, we have lowered the price of the OST (released through Steam) from $8.99 to $2.99 and are investigating how best to publish any potentially missing songs.
changedModdingThough we are unable to provide Steam Workshop support or the full source code, we are offering support to our modding community over on Discord wherever possible. Our limitations here mostly come from our developer bandwidth and that the code contains plugins we are legally incapable of publishing.
changedInventory systemWe are unable to revert to the old inventory system. We have heard your feedback and looked into the possibility but, unfortunately, the inventory system is too structurally rooted to many of the elements in the game. An update would be much more than just changing one element back, and the scope of this shift goes well beyond our capabilities at this time.
changedMeadow serversWe have no plans to shut down the Meadow servers. We love that Meadow still has such an active and passionate community and we understand the concern this announcement has sparked to some. However, at this time, we are not planning to shut down the servers. Should anything change, we will keep the community posted through Meadow channels.

After our announcement on the future of Book of Travels (please read the full announcement here), we want to thank you all so much for sharing your feedback, support, and questions with us. We have been overwhelmed by how many of you share our passion for this project. We share your love, your nostalgia, your sadness, and your disappointment.

A few questions, concerns, and recurring confusions kept coming up in the various replies, comments, and messages we received. We hope the following FAQ can address some of these major pain points but, should you have any remaining questions, please see the final entry for resources and means of outreach.

We are deeply thankful for all your support and will do our best to address your remaining questions and concerns in the coming weeks.

Self hosting or local coop

Though multiplayer was always part of our vision for the game, we are happy with the single-player, legacy experience we have created with this release. Having an easy way to implement self-hosted servers or a local co-op mode were both things we investigated but didn’t have the resources for.

Self hosting servers are, however, something we believe possible through modding and we’re incredibly excited to see the community already investigating the option in our Discord!

Music

The music was so much of the creation of the world and we were so happy to see so many of you agreed and wanted to see the music released.

In order to make the music more accessible to our community, we have lowered the price of the OST (released through Steam) from $8.99 to $2.99 and are investigating how best to publish any potentially missing songs.

Modding

The love from our community of modders has been incredible and we cannot understate how excited we are to see where the talented folks of our community take Book of Travels.

Though we are unable to provide Steam Workshop support or the full source code, we are offering support to our modding community over on Discord wherever possible. Our limitations here mostly come from our developer bandwidth and that the code contains plugins we are legally incapable of publishing.

Inventory system

We are unable to revert to the old inventory system. We have heard your feedback and looked into the possibility but, unfortunately, the inventory system is too structurally rooted to many of the elements in the game. An update would be much more than just changing one element back, and the scope of this shift goes well beyond our capabilities at this time.

Meadow servers

We have no plans to shut down the Meadow servers. We love that Meadow still has such an active and passionate community and we understand the concern this announcement has sparked to some. However, at this time, we are not planning to shut down the servers. Should anything change, we will keep the community posted through Meadow channels.

Clarification on “active development”

With Book of Travels no longer being in active development, this means we are no longer actively creating new content or investigating new features. Any allotted resources to the game will be spent investigating bugs that occur as a result of the switch to offline.

Day/night cycle

Days and seasons are now tied to your local machine time.

Bugs

We will be prioritizing bugs that occur as part of the switch to offline. Should we have allotted resources available, we will look into other high-priority community-reported bugs.

Offline achievements

We are unaware of any achievements that require you to be online in order to obtain. Any achievements broken due to bugs will be investigated as we transition to offline but will take a low priority to anything that arises because of the transition.

Price

When deciding a new price we wanted to reflect that we put a lot of work into this game while also taking into account that it is not the full game we set out to create. We understand this has been frustrating to those who paid more for the game and hope you can still enjoy it as it is today.

Kickstarter exclusive rewards

In game exclusive rewards that are already in your inventory will be carried over in your character download.
