Hana Klo (beta)
Hana Klo (Hanafuda Klondike) is a solitaire (single-player card game) played with Hanafuda cards.
Just like traditional Klondike played with standard playing cards, the game consists of Rows, Deck, Opened, and Slots. Fill all Slots with cards from January through December to clear the game.
Terminology
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Rows | Seven columns containing 1, 2, ... 7 cards from left to right. The top card in each column is face up. |
| Deck | The face-down draw pile in the upper-right corner. |
| Opened | Cards drawn from the Deck. |
| Slots | The card slots in the upper-left corner. Fill them with cards from January to December in order to win. |
Rules
Select a card with the A Button (Left Click).
X Button: Draw a card from the Deck to Opened (shortcut).
Y Button: Undo.
You may stack a card that is one month lower onto any face-up card in the Rows from another Row or from Opened.
However, Kasu on Kasu (placing a Kasu card onto another Kasu card) is not allowed.
Selecting a card that cannot be moved results in a short time penalty.
When all face-down cards in the Rows have been revealed, the game automatically completes the remaining moves.
The game ends if your move count reaches 1,000.
Impossible starting layouts are eliminated by reshuffling during the initial shuffle.
If you happen to find an unwinnable layout, please let me know the SEED value shown in the lower-left corner of the screen.
Differences from Traditional Klondike
| Item | Hana Klo | Klondike |
|---|---|---|
| Cards | 48 (1–12 × 4) | 52 (1–13 × 4) |
| Suits | Kasu / Ribbon / Seed / Bright | ♠ / ♣ / ♦ / ♥ |
| Row Stacking Rule | Kasu on Kasu is prohibited | Same-color suits are prohibited |
Since Hana Klo uses fewer cards and has less restrictive stacking rules, it is generally easier than traditional Klondike.
Work in Progress
The rules for Hana Klo are still under development, so breaking changes may occur.
If you have suggestions for improving the rules, I'd appreciate it if you could post them in the Steam Community.
Since the rules are not yet considered stable, an in-game manual has not been implemented.
Once the rules are finalized, I plan to add a leaderboard (with replay support) and achievements.
I'd also like to compose a brand-new soundtrack specifically for Hana Klo.
Price Adjustment
After Hana Klo is completed, I plan to increase the game's price by $1.
Existing owners will not need to purchase any DLC or pay any additional fees.
Developer Notes
I'm terrible at memorizing things, so I still haven't completely memorized the order of the Hanafuda months.
Battle Hanafuda displays month numbers on each card, so it's not a problem in-game. However, when I play with real Hanafuda cards, I still get confused—especially April and July, whose artwork looks somewhat similar.
I really enjoy Klondike solitaire. In fact, you could say my smartphone is basically a dedicated Klondike machine.
That inspired me to wonder:
"Maybe creating a Klondike game with Hanafuda cards would help me memorize the months."
That's how Hana Klo was born.
Although Hana Klo uses an original Klondike-inspired ruleset, several Hanafuda solitaire games already exist.
A community member introduced me to PySol Fan Club, a website featuring a huge collection of Python-based solitaire games. There I discovered several interesting Hanafuda solitaire variants such as Oonsoo and Four Seasons.
Because of that, I may add some of those games as additional game modes in the future.
Of course, I'd also like to support traditional Hanafuda games such as Hana Awase and Hachi-Hachi.
Since Hana Awase appears in many popular Hanafuda games, I'd especially like to implement that one.
I don't have a concrete schedule yet.
For now, Arcade Mode remains my highest priority.
That said, I'm not rushing toward completion, so I'd like to continue making occasional detours like this while steadily working toward the full release and leaving Early Access.
Stage 5 Introduction
Added Stage 5 Introduction, a short looping track planned for the opening scene of Stage 5 in Arcade Mode, to the Music Room.
Improved Free Play Navigation
After playing a Free Play game, pressing"Press Any Button"on the title screen will now skip the main menu and take you directly to the Free Play menu.
In a previous update, I separated Free Play from the main menu. However, that change made it easier to accidentally launch Arcade Mode when players simply wanted to play Free Play repeatedly.
With this update, I hope the overall user experience becomes smoother and helps prevent accidental menu selections.
