My Prayer

42-5712 'My Prayer' was on a mission near Frankfurt when it was hit by three 20mm incendiary cannon rounds which exploded in the wing and under the pilots compartment, setting fire to the aircraft. The Bombardier and Navigator immediately bailed out. Due to smoke and flames the pilot lost control, but managed to recover from a slow spin at 6000 feet. Co Pilot Roger Layn oversaw most of the other men bailing out, in some instances 'using force' to make sure the parachutes were properly adjusted, however Earl Cherry, the engineer, was wounded and his parachute burnt.

Pilot James D. Judy decided to try to return home. He dropped to 100 feet and flew a zig-zag pattern over occupied territory while Cherry and Layn fought spot fires and fired at enemy fighters, burning out both waist guns. The pilot managed to fly back to England to crash land on grass at RAF Manston. All crewmen survived.

Brave the deadly skies of occupied Europe!
