Alchemic Beasts changes
Hi everyone!
We have been hard at work on Alchemic Beasts, trying to get a tech demo complete so that we can either run a kickstarter campaign or pitch to publishers. I've been working on the beast breeding and transmutation system. The tech demo will feature most, if not all, of the main mechanics and features that we want to have in the game and will take place in a small story-less tech demo room or area.
The video above shows two hookwings breeding to become a Blazwing. There are so many things that factor into the evolution or variation of a beast. Let me explain it!
Each one of these beasts has a full tree of possibilities! At the bottom, we have the base beast and it's variants. When breeding, beasts can "evolve" horizontally. These are called variants and are possibly naturally occurring through breeding or cross-breeding beasts of the same type and life stage. They are mostly palette swaps, but we wanted them to still be cool, so we gave them some elemental pizzazz!
To get to a new tier, you would have to transmute the beasts with a medium. With alchemy, you'll see some pretty crazy things. In this particular tree, we have the heatheren and its variants as the next tier of creatures.
A heatheren, the one in the middle, is the natural air evolution to a hookwing.
On the next tier, things get really wild. We have true dual elemental transmutations. Going from left to right, we have a firzome (fire and air), harkwin (water and air), zabeak (pure air), coreaper (nature and air), and goblem (void and air). These can only be achieved through alchemy, so at this point we're no longer breeding in the normal sense. There has to be mediums involved in the creation of these beasts.
Beyond that, we have a metasaur and quarvar. These are considered "ultimates" and usually have all types of different metals mixed into their designs. These ultimates are mixes of 3 elements and are usually very powerful and hard to obtain.
You will notice that for the Zabeak, I used the term "pure air." This is because it can only be acquired by having a purebred hookwing chain. A purebred hookwing chain is a hookwing ancestry that has never deviated from being air. There can be no variations or non-air transmutations in its ancestry. It would have to be 2 air hookwings to make the heatherens, 2 air heatherens to make the zabeak. I think this will be more for hardcore players who want to... "transmute 'em all", for lack of a better phrase. This beast can be considered an ultimate although it is not technically in the top tier (visually on the chart).
All beasts have a similar structure when it comes to breeding an transmutation except for the shellodon. Keep in mind that it is a celestial beast, so of course it would be special in some way! We'll get into that in a future update!
This is the menu that you will be doing your beast alchemy in! It's not finalized yet, but it's pretty packed with information. Where it says no requirements, if there is something special that you need to do to get a certain outcome, there will be a list of requirements that need to be met and they will be green or red depending on if the requirement has been met.
Though you can't choose directly what the beasts will breed into, you can definitely help them along to the one that you want by meeting as many of the requirements as you can. The lines change between green and red with green being definitely possible, yellow/orange being maybe, and red being NOPE, these are impossible odds. Once you breed or transmute a particular beast, it will no longer be blacked out.
What do you think about breeding and transmutation so far? Who would you main from this tree? Do you have any questions about the process of breeding or evolving? We'd love to hear your thoughts so make sure you comment!
