I decided about a year ago to update Age of Gladiators in Unity, first just to see how it would look and function hypothetically in a new engine - but then I kept going with it until the game was complete!

I decided about a year ago to update Age of Gladiators in Unity, first just to see how it would look and function hypothetically in a new engine - but then I kept going with it until the game was complete!

Along the way I made numerous changes to game systems, added quality of life additions, and updated the UI to something a bit more fitting for this day-and-age.

Here is a small list of the changes I managed to make:

  • Complete UI reworking

  • Damage Mitigation now fed by agility and reflexes as well

  • Reworked the city advancement mechanics by adding a few more options to moving cities

  • Age incline and decline of gladiators more drastic

  • Staff, Lender, and more portraits added

  • Greed also affects daily spending habits of a gladiator

  • Gladiator portraits added to UI throughout - before you just saw their names and nothing else

  • Stable now contributes to fatigue recovery time

  • Stable now has countdown for improvements

  • Scrollbars instead of next previous buttons

  • Revised Expertise significantly - so much so that it's nearly a new system

  • Revised Player Perks significantly

  • Weapons and Armor now have Stamina costs

  • Dodging and Blocking now use Stamina

  • More Player Portraits

  • Fight Setup screens made more efficiently to reduce clicking when setting up a fight

  • Fights now show a scrollable log of each turn

  • Much better music player

  • Much better tooltips

  • Much better save system and interface

  • The game now works on more resolutions and won't be windowed in wider resolutions like before

  • More icons in the UI rather than just text

  • Custom cursor added

  • Added Killer Instinct and Work Ethic to gladiator personalities

  • Removed Trading for now

  • Animals now have names

  • Improved alerts system at the top UI to show pressing issues

And much more.

I hope you enjoy this version of the game - I think it's a massive improvement.
