Dev Diary #1: The World and Protagonist of Abyss of Doom

Welcome to the very first entry in our Abyss of Doom developer diary series!

From time to time, we’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes details from development: locations, gameplay systems, atmosphere, challenges, and the decisions that gradually shape the game.

First of all, we want to thank everyone for supporting the project, sharing feedback, and adding Abyss of Doom to your wishlists. There are already more than 12,000 of you, and that truly means a lot to us.

In this first entry, we want to take a closer look at the protagonist and the setting of Abyss of Doom. For us, the world of the game is not just a backdrop for the events, but one of the key parts of the story.

The World of Abyss of Doom

Here are just some of the places players will visit in Abyss of Doom:

• The ruins of medieval Italy from the 13th and 14th centuries, along with underground passages where it is easy to lose your way. Here, you will uncover many secrets and dangers that will pull you deeper into the darkness Steam post image

• Excavation sites and quarries, where players will explore medieval structures built over many years deep within the caves Steam post image

• Ancient Roman ruins and catacombs, where you will explore halls and columbaria that still carry the memory of past tragedies

  

• Underground streams, vast caves, and narrow labyrinths that seem to have no end. In their depths, you will find echoes of an ancient era, as well as answers to what really happened there and what role the ancient Germanic tribes played in it

Who Is Ernesto Brizio?

The protagonist of Abyss of Doom is Ernesto Brizio, a 28-year-old looter from a small town in northern Italy. For several years, he has been connected to Sinners, an organization involved in searching for and plundering burial sites.

At the beginning of the game, Ernesto is in a difficult situation. Sinners is facing financial problems, work has become scarce, and Ernesto, left without money, begins crossing the line more and more often, getting involved in theft. One of these incidents ends in an accident, after which Ernesto is no longer the same person he once was.

The past continues to haunt him, but instead of facing the trauma he has been through, he tries to grab onto any chance to escape his debts. That chance comes in the form of a letter from Sinners with a new assignment: to find the tomb of Count Alferio and his treasure somewhere in northwestern Italy.

For Ernesto, this is a chance to return to a carefree life. He sets out hoping for easy loot, but he carries with him the things he has never been able to leave behind: resentment, hatred, and memories that follow him everywhere.
